Poetry can be an area that lots of teachers shy away from. Poetry offers children the joy of crafting their writing and playing around with words. There are plenty of resources online to help any teacher who either lacks the confidence or expertise to teach poetry. A Caribbean Dozen

The Caribbean Dozen is one of my favourite poetry books. It contains the work of thirteen Caribbean poets is included in this rich collection with illustrations which truly enhance the words on the page. The poets each share a childhood experience with the reader as an introduction to their poems and there are biographical notes on each at the end of the book. To taste the impressive variety in this book, try Pamela Mordecai’s light-hearted ‘Remember’ and then turn the page to discover her moving ‘Lament of an Arawak Child’.
